Blog 9 - Stepping down from staff
Hello. I'm here to post a final blog as a staff member. I'm announcing that I'll be resigning from staff this year on this wiki/fandom. I adopted it with the thought process that I'd be constantly active, but as life went by, I've gotten more and more busy with my personal life. Now, I don't have any free time towards being a staff member to justify my staff role.
- 1 What's next?
- 2 Who replaces my spot?
- 3 When will the resignation take effect?
- 4 What's my next plans going forward?
- 5 Thoughts on what this place will look like in the future?
The remaining staff members will resume their duties. The staff team will undergo a 4th generation phase of the staffing, which succeeds the first 3 phases(1st-FatSausage2011 Reign/Beginning Phase, 2nd-Jonius7 Reign…
Blog 8 - What's Next/Resigning from the official Discord
Hello. Posting an important blog. This is regarding what I plan on doing now.
- 1 What's Next
- 1.1 On Here
- 1.2 On the Discord
- 1.3 On Steam
- 2 The Future
I'm honestly not sure that I have it in me to continue to run this place. Regardless, I plan on stepping up starting in December of this year. Right now, I'm currently getting plans established in the recent announcement on the Discord that I made. (I'll cover that in the next section)
I'm advocating for members that wants to help build up this wiki to assist me in doing so. I need at least one other bureaucrat to assist in building this fandom up.
However, once I've made the necessary changes and additions onto the fandom, I'll call quits on being a staff member here. Personal life's going to be a hell of…
Blog 7 - My thoughts regarding the maps
This blog is regarding my thoughts on where additional groups could've been added into the maps post-release in the first game and what could potentially still be added into the sequel's story mode. This is simply my thoughts and I'll give out what the groups could've been like (First Game) or could be like (Sequel). The sections within the game sections will contain a possible group/community name and isn't confirmed at all.
- 1 Survivalist
- 1.1 Liquor Store Mob
- 1.2 The Scared One
- 1.3 The Feds
- 1.4 Los Ceros-allied Community
- 2 Survivalist: Invisible Strain
This could be a recruitable looter group that could consist of 3 to 4 members and have a well and a outhouse. They could be a mission established by Wyatt prior to having a meeting with Los Ceros, in w…
Blog 6 - Where Was I?
Hey everyone. As you've noticed, it's been over a year since I've posted a blog or did much of anything useful around here, which I apologize for that. Both stuff on Fandom, my personal life, my hobbies, and with work life has been affecting my role as the adopter; however, I'm announcing that I've gotten to a point in my life that I'll be back to being much much more active than a lot lately.
- 1 What happened since the last blog
- 1.1 Personal Life
- 1.2 Hobbies
- 1.3 Work Life
Oh man........so much has happened. The chaos within my house from someone that used to live with my mom and I was definitely affecting my availability. The guy, who's my mom's ex-boyfriend, ended up being served a PPO back in March of this year after countless times of abuse bein…
Blog 5 - Future
Hello. I'm sorry that I haven't done much of fixing around on here. The things is that my personal life's gonna a lot more busier since adopting and revamping this Fandom. I'm ultimately wanting to establish a full staff to keep this Fandom from being abandoned again and I cannot do this alone. I think that I've went over my head with adopting and maintaining this Fandom, but I'm not giving up. Once some issues with my personal life is settled and fixed, I promise that this place will be full of information.
There's projects that I want to see happen on here.
- Deletion of different items pages to have them put into a singular Items page for each of the two games with sections for Item Type(Keys, Weapons, Ammo, Construction, Food, etc.)
- Fandom ac…
Blog 4 - Something New
Hello. It's been over a year since I did a blog thingy. The Fandom still could use some help, but right now, I'm going to try to adopt another "wiki" that I'm going to have it be a connected Fandom to here. This idea isn't a brand new idea. A former staff member had tried this idea, but he's no longer on here. I'm not going to post the link to that "wiki" until the adoption process passes.
Blog 3 - Fandom Events
Hello. I'm back with another blog, this regarding the Fandom. I'm wanting to know what kind of Fandom/Wiki events you'd all like to see go on with this place.
Blog 2 - Which custom stories are acceptable here?
Hello. Just thought to describe what type of custom stories are or are not acceptable for creating characters pages for. So there's two types of custom stories that we look at.
These custom stories were made to be for an engaging playthrough and there's an at least decent story to go along with it. An example of this is the Example Story.
These custom stories were purely made as joke stories or weren't made clear enough to be worth pages on here. The stories with these are cringe or lack worth towards being additions with the custom stories sections on here.
Blog 1 - Hello
Hello. For those who hasn't kept up on the updates on here, today is where things will be improving for the better on here. I've officially adopted this Fandom/Wiki and I vow to uphold my position to improve on things around here. I'll need to have this week for planning out what more changes will come to here, but I've already made some changes:
- Partially updated the main page
- New theme design
- Updated the Wiki Navigations and Wikia CSS
- Removal of inactive staff as a part of a cleanup
- New Wiki pages
- Survivalist Game Wiki:Staff Request
- Survivalist Game Wiki:Staff
- Survivalist Game Wiki:Administrators
- Survivalist Game Wiki:Rules
- Create a full set of rules for everyone on here to follow (Survivalist Game Wiki:Rules)
- Completing the main page update
- Creatin…
Update 10 October 2019 - Throwback
My, has today been a throwback day. I reunited back with my old RuneScape clan, it'd been a while since I felt I was active on RuneScape, I'd sporadically log in and play for a couple of days only to disappear for weeks or a couple of months, but today felt different. What has this got to do with Survivalist? Well short story is I started editing the RuneScape Wiki again. And my activity in editing wikis leads me to checking up on Survivalist Game Wiki, but additionally feeling motivated to actually post stuff again (because I would check the wiki times over the past 2 years but not really feel like changing anything, i.e. a silent observer of a wiki, rather than being a creator).
In my 2018 Blog post, User_blog:Jonius7/Update_3_February_2…
Update 3 February 2018 - Yes, it's been that long
Just thought I should update, but for real this time. Can't believe it's been almost 2 years since I stopped blog posting, though I'd thought about posting an update or even writing one (a couple of times in 2017) but never finishing it.
As of now, until I get a better computer, I am unable to play Survivalist and really get in on adding more info to the wiki. There's a lot more unfinished work to be done, such as adding navigation tables for buildings, locations and such (we have ones for items and characters iirc). Plus I would want to datamine the chat head images of all the characters to add in as well, since eg: most of the F.E.M.A. characters look similar in their Hazmat suits. Quests and game guides are seriously lacking, I said at s…
Update 16 April 2016 - Next-level Items Navbox
Time for an update. These blog posts seem to be harder for me to write than before, mainly because I forget what I have been doing over a period of time, so I go and check my list of contributions.
In my blog post on March 3, I mentioned that I was working on Navboxes. Today I have finally made a big update in completing the Items Navbox. The problem I had previously was having multiple columns in the navbox, but after looking at different wikis, I based the coding on the terraria.gamepedia.com template, while the appearance is most similar to the minecraft.gamepedia.com and postal.wikia.com templates. I also had to tweak the ItemLink template a bit to get it to incorporate arguments for customising what text to be displayed. It took me aro…
Update 27 March 2016 - Survivors Sandbox
Ok, since I only make a few edits here and there every few days, I'll try and list them here in this post, since my last blog post.
I was (and still am) concerned with the definition of a Determinant character. As it stands there are way too many Determinant characters, and only some are integral to the core story while others are just side characters.
I still need to do work on creating those nav boxes, that'll be a major step in standardising page design. As for page design, I added a notice to whenever someone creates a new article to use the templates for creating new pages, as someone had created 30 character pages with no template and now I have to go back and add infoboxes etc to all of them.
More recently (March 22), I worked on a new…
Update 3 March - Future Plans
Well it's obvious enough that I have not been working on this wiki to the same capacity that I was doing in December. So I'll start by saying that blog posts will no longer have a continuous date on them (eg: 8-12 January).
There have been some helpful discussion posts on the Steam Discussion Forums that I have turned into guides. I hope to continue doing this, though they will all need tidying up and I hope to add screenshot images to them to make the guides more comprehensive.
I've found another "big project" to get excited about: Navboxes! These are placed at the bottom of the page and link to other article pages in the same category (eg: on the Pistol page there will be a Navbox with links to all the other items, sorted into categories).…
Update 27 February - I'd better explain
Sorry! I haven't updated this blog because I wasn't sure what to say really, also I previously had continuous blog posts with interesting things happening in each, and it sucks that I broke that trend.
I only did some minor editing on 23-25 January. But the main thing was that I went on a long holiday overseas from 29 January to 13 February. During this time I did minimal editing, though I did visit the Wiki a few times on my mobile phone.
After coming back, well it kinda threw me off, my next plans for this wiki. Also I realised that what had been motivating me a lot during these previous months was creating new and exciting templates, other wiki-wide changes that I felt were a clear step in improving the wiki. When it came to writing and e…
Update 21-22 January - Speechboxes and Main Page Redesign, Stage One
All right! I had been looking around for "speech bubbles", "talk bubbles", "speech boxes" etc on other Wikias. There was a nice talk bubble on Final Fantasy Wiki/ Kingdom Hearts Wiki, but it was split into two sections, separated by the bubble tick in the middle, which was not what I wanted. Then I stumbled across the Toon Town Wiki, they had a template that was perfect! I just tweaked the default values a bit and we have something that is as close as we can get to the speech bubbles in-game:
I then tweaked it further to be able to add a character image to the left side of it:
Which got me thinking. We don't have the actual character icons from the game, nor are they static assets, as they come from character models.
Anyway I'll work on that …
Update 14, 18-20 January
Yeah, I'd better give an update.
On Jan 14 I made some tweaks to the Skills Profile Template (view my previous blog post), to remove all the padding that was popping up in certain areas of it when put into an infobox.
However after that I kinda felt disconnected and maybe burned out and did not edit from 15-17 Jan. (Shock) Yeah I know breaks my streak of daily editing since December 10. I was kinda preoccupied and busy with other things. I know there is still so much more to do, it's not easy keeping this up.
Also, Bob has given me a list of all in-game characters with their attributes, even the ones that you can't recruit. I plan on parsing the data into a spreadsheet at some point.
So I'll put my next sort of 1 or 2 goals here for motivatio…
Update 12-13 January - You've got some good skills...
Last blog post I mentioned working on the Character Infobox and Skills template. Well, I copied over the Wikipedia rating template, fiddled around with it, and realised it was far, far too complex for our needs, very bloated code, and incorporated several other templates that don't work on Wikia (only Wikipedia), such as Loop, Plural, Category handling. So I created my own template, using the Wikipedia template as a guide. It took me a lot less time that I thought it would to get it up and working, literally 20 mins or less. I've been spending more time configuring and tweaking it.
Also set to work on expanding the Character Infobox. Added a few new attributes, such as personality profile, fisticuffs, quests, and of course Skills. I had to …
Update 8-12 January - Hold on
I haven't made an update since on 8 January I made the bulk of my edits. Added in all the keyboard key images (at full size 160px x 140px), formatted the Controls page, added in Controller button images as well. The Controls page is pretty much complete, though I'm not 100% on all the controller controls, I may have to try some in-game.
The next things really for me to tackle are finalising the Character Infobox, and the Skills (5 levels) template, which I've been putting off for a bit. Also the redesign of the main page, which really, I'm not too sure about, but I think I'll figure it out later.
Update 2-8 January: Mobile Editing
Sorry! I haven't had a blog post for a few reasons: I went on a holiday, and only could do some mobile editing. I haven't made any major additions really yet.
On Jan 2, I believe I uploaded the Map to the Wiki and some other editing stuff. I moved the Infection Strains section on the main page to its own article, and transcluded the contents onto the main page. Slightly more dynamic than before.
Then holiday from 3 - 6 Jan, I only did some mobile editing, a few edits here and there.
We have some more contributors, just been asking on Steam Discussions.
Not much more to say at the moment. I'll get back to work on the big stuff I have been planning.
Update 30 December - 1 Jan: Obsessive Stitching Disorder (Map Strain)
Ok, time for another update! I should have done this earlier, but really there was lots of time where I wasn't editing the wiki and busy with other things.
Late on 29 December I decided to add a sort of image of the town map of Dejado, however I realised to my dismay that the we have was quite blurry when zoomed in on a single town.
On 30 December I played Survivalist again, decided to get as far as I could. I was rushing towards the end, sacrificing community members, but I finished the game! I now have access to cheats! So my motivation for finishing the game was being able to reveal the entire map. I could then zoom in as far as I could in game to get the most detailed map images. This would require a lot of screenshots though. I first …
Update 28-29 December - I see the Open Sans at the end of the tunnel
Geez, I must of had an urge to rant out my frustrations in my blog post yesterday, because less than 24 hours later I have fixed all the problems! And they were just little things, but it took me a lot more than a little time to find and fix them.
After fiddling around with the Key template (and its use in Questbox), adding and reverting and who knows what, the problem was in adding a #default in the #switch branch I had, when it wasn't even needed. Eg:
Eventually it was as simple as putting the @import statements in not as I was doing. And no other fancy addition of CSS classes needed, it could all be defined in the template itself. Geez, that was annoying.
So I still have a lot to do, now and future plans:
- Finish off Key and Mouse template…
Update 25-28 December - Make it Work! 101
Between being busy around Christmas, having to use anothe computer, and other things, I have only been able to make minimal edits these past few days, that is until today, 28 December. Uploaded the rest of the item icons (clearer versions from Bob), then onto expanding the Key and Mouse templates. Let's just say that I haven't got it fully working yet and A new world looks like trash because of the template. Problem is with the [] brackets. I thought it'd be a nice idea since actions like [Move]
and [RotateCamera]
appear as such in the game text, I could just configure the template, and then when using it in the articles, just plop on a . Argh.
Also I discovered, when using Firefox, that Google Fonts were not working at all, unlike in Chrome. I …
Update 23-24 December - Wiki Makeover and New Beginnings
Ok, I haven't wrote this blog post until now because on the 23rd I did nothing out of the ordinary, just some regular edits to articles. Hmm, on second thought I guess I did do some things. I decided that when I got the admin rights, to have the theme and all other things ready to go so I could implement them all at once. Part of that was creating the Wiki Logo. I found the Survivalist Header text and tried to add a "WIKI" text to it using Paint.NET and Powerpoint, but the bevel wasn't quite in the same direction and looked a little different.
Then I realised the .psd files Bob had sent me. They had the "SURVIVALIST" heading on them, the white text for the game logo. I used Photoshop to copy the exact effects onto the "WIKI" text, resized i…
Update 20-22 December 2015 - Wasn't that great.
So, continued to live on mobile data, except well I have stuff in real life, so didn't have a computer for a whole 24+ hours. I tried some mobile editing and such, was clunky as the VisualEditor would misbehave and such. I got internet back today (22 December) finally, and I checked the images that Bob the P.R. Bot had sent me to compare with the ones I had extracted. Well there is a quality difference. It's not that noticable at 100%, but if you zoom in on the images, Bob's are of better quality.
Damn and I was so excited too about extracting images back then! I fiddled around, trying to figure out what was making my extracted images lose quality, it could be something with the C# methods of getting a Stream and writing it to an image file…
Update 18-19 December - Content, Talk and more plans!
Ok, I've just been editing some Items pages and added some content + the standard templates on some Items pages that were created before I had the templates. Fiddling around with templates (mobile version appearance perhaps) and fixed more pages in categories.
We have more activity from other users now, namely TWDFan630 and Lakeside, so just some general talk and editing.
I have problems though, my house has lost access to the internet (ugh), am living on limited mobile data so my edits will be limited too until I get internet back. Meanwhile offline I did some work on those images of the keyboard keys and mouse buttons, they are nearly ready to be uploaded and used once I double check the templates I have.
While going through some of the Su…
Update 16-17 December 2015 - I am really messing around...
Ok, there was some more I did on 16 December but it's dragged on to 17 December, so let's put it here. I wasted a lot of time getting a Questbox template up. And, well after lots of formatting and CSS issues, I finally got a Questbox that looks very similar to the one in-game! Check this out:
(Of course it's F2 but I used W image as an example)
The next thing was to try and get those lovely Key and Mouse images from in-game onto the Wiki, as I may have mentioned before. Well I had the asset files for those. keys.xnb contained a grid of just the white label on each of the keyboard keys, 2048 x 2048 px, in a 16x16 grid, resulting in 128 x 128 squares. keybackground.xnb was a 160 x 160 black key background, however the top 20 pixels were trans…
Update 16 December 2015 - More of the same
Ok, so here it continues, working through it slowly. I've decided to leave most of the CSS stuff until when I become an admin because if I try to show it now, I'll be making workarounds which I won't need once I have admin permissions. The CSS I want to implement is already complicated enough as is without having restrictions.
Renamed all articles in Structure category to Structures, a new article on Hunger, and well I did do some Template customisation on my user page: a possible Header Title for the main page. It's based on the Terraria Wiki one, just reskinned a bit. There's also the need to change the font to Open Sans (the one in-game), for that authentic feel.
Update 14-15 December - A lot I can do, A lot I have to wait
Well, I've stopped the 150+ edits a day thing, toning it down a bit. I might have burned out if I continued. Also life is holding up, so less Wiki editing time. There is still a heck of a lot ot do, I may have standardised pages with Infoboxes and Quoteboxes, but I still feel like I could add in more templates, the pages aren't tidy per se. Of course, slowly filling in all the item pages, but categories, well that's another thing I'll have to sort out, easier as admin to do it. Also some files I misspelled, and well can't rename those at the moment.
I've been thinking also about what to do to improve the Main Page, of course, since it's the one most people will see first. If I really want it to be at the standard we expect from a wiki, I'm…
Update 13 December 2015 - Part 2: Can I mass use categories?
Well, after creating like 30 item pages I realised that none of them were categorised. Oh great! Maybe if I put it to automatically do it in the template. Oh wait, it makes the template part of the category itself! Category:Item oh wait a minute, shouldn't it be Category:Items ? (checks other wikis for comparison), oh yeah, should be dammit! Wait then that means all the pages I created and categorised Structure should be Structures... :( Oh damn, if I was admin I could remove the category from the article page itself, but because I'm not I have to go into the source code of each page to do it. Ok I'll leave it for later.
Ok, so then I decided to finish up stitching screenshots of the in-game patch notes together. I have uploaded it now, it i…
Update 13 December 2015 - Mass creating pages with ease
So continues the long journey of improving this Wiki. Still so much more to be done, and I think I spend more time creating stuff to create content rather than the actual content itself. But first today I spent a whole bunch of time adding custom CSS to my personal CSS files. No one else can see it but me, but I thought it would help, so when I get admin permissions I can just use the code I already have in my personal CSS. I was manually adding style attributes, trying to get rid of annoying green and tiled backgrounds, but I wasn't getting everywhere, just the main content areas. I wasted a lot of time trying to fully get the nav bar orange. I went to other wikis but their css was complex and customised (well I forgot I was viewing their…
Sick of the Website Colour and Background?
So since I'm not admin yet, I can't get access to the theme designer to easily change the colours and background of this website. However, you are able to have your own personal CSS files that modifies the Wikia look for yourself only. Probably not such a high priority thing but I did it anyway and got some custom CSS.
If you would like to try it for yourself, go to and copy the source code there. Then go to open in classic editor or source mode and paste and publish. Press Ctrl + F5 or Shift + F5 to refresh your browser cache.
You will now be able to browse the Wika using my CSS! I hope you like the colour scheme of yellow, orange and a bit of Red and grey.
EDIT: I copied the CSS from a fresh new Wiki custom to the colour scheme, seems I …
Adopting This Wiki: In case I hadn't made it official already...
Well I've been mentioning in different places that someone had to adopt this Wiki, and I was planning to adopt this Wiki, but I seem to have been so focused on content that I don't have an actual Blog Post about it. So rather than copy and reiterate most of the same things I've already said, I'll give you the link to the Adoption Request.
These are the other places that I mention:
Survivalist Steam Discussion about the Wiki
TWDFan630's Message Wall
Lakeside's Message Wall
TWDFan630's original adoption Blog Post
Summary: I plan to adopt this Wiki. 3 Main reasons I am asking to adopt this wiki for admin/bureaucrat permissions:
- Request for a Wiki Name/URL Change
- Change the design theme.
- Clean up categories and pages.
Update 12 December 2015 (Part 2)
Another update. I'm finding I can actually control the appearance of individual pages a whole lot, more and more now, without needing admin permissions. Looking at the code from other Wikis such as Terraria Wiki, I realised they were doing multiple columns with a simple CSS table, the syntax was slightly mixed in with html and Wiki syntax. Thus I got rid of the Multicol implementation and got the 3 column table up on the Main page, with vertically aligning the text to the top of each cell. The result looks similar, but is much easier to edit in VisualEditor without having to go into Source mode.
Other contributions, I've made so much since then I'm starting to lose track:
- Added Version History (there is a lot to write, 30 versions worth of p…
Update 12 December 2015 (Part 1)
Ok, after getting images yesterday, it was time for more work on the Wiki. Currently I have added in all the structure images, and standardised the infobox in Template:Building_Infobox . Templates are taking up a lot of my time as I attempt to standardise things for each page. I don't have much prior experience so I am experimenting a lot and copying from other wikis, this code I do not fully understand.
Anyways we have a Gold Icon template! Any time you want to represent the cost of something, just use for 5 gold, and the template will automatically give you a nice small Gold Icon with the value next to it. Here I'll show you now: Insulin costs , which is very expensive.
More to come!
Update 11 December 2015
Well I've taken it on myself to do as much as I can for this wiki. Today I began at looking at extracting images from the .pak files, images that could be used on the Wiki. I really was unsure if I could do this, and it's a long story, but I guess my programming experience helped in coding some C# on top of the code that created the .paks to extract the .xnbs. However, standard XNB to PNG converters such as the one for Terraria didn't work. I then found a paint.NET extension. I've never been so happy to see a pistol sprite in all its glory.
On the wiki I am still creating templates and infoboxes, building the framework so that lots of pages can be standardised when the time comes.
